The papers consist of fourteen letters written by Bliss from 1862 to 1864 while serving in the Union Army; genealogical documents pertaining to the Bliss family; documents gathered by Jesse Elizabeth Hill Durrett to supplement her 1925 widow's pension claim; photographs of Bliss, the Durretts, and unidentified family and acquaintances.

2nd Lieutenant, 44th Illinois Infantry. Bliss enlisted in 1861 and served until 1864. He served in various locations in Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, participating in the battles of Pea Ridge, Perryville, and Murfreesboro. Postwar residence in Little Rock, Arkansas where his granddaughter, Jesse Elizabeth Hill, married Spanish-American War veteran Joseph J. Durrett in 1908. From the description of Jesse C.
